The Royal Oak overturned the downwards trend in 1972 during a period of existential crisis for the watch industry due to the boom of cheap quartz watches made in Asia. Audemars Piguet needed a bold, solid stainless steel luxury sports watch, and they entrusted the mission to renowned designer Gerald Genta. Inspired by a deep-sea diving helmet, he created an octagonal bezel with visible mounting screws, a large 39mm case with an integrated bracelet, and a futuristic design that redefined watchmaking in the seventies.

The reference Royal Oak Selfwinding 15550ST.OO.1356ST.06 features a 37mm stainless steel case with the signature eight silver screws on the iconic bezel. This watch has a stunning cobalt blue dial engraved with the "Grande Tapisserie" pattern. White gold applied hour markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating enhance readability, while the date window is positioned at 3 o’clock and the AP logo proudly displayed at 12 o’clock.

Beneath the dial lies the selfwinding calibre 3120 movement, visible through the glareproofed sapphire crystal case-back. This movement offers hours, minutes, center seconds, and a date function, with an impressive power reserve of approximately 60 hours.
