Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 ‘Stick Dial’ with Caliber 3186 – The Ultimate Collector’s Set
Why the Rolex 16710 is a Collector’s Favorite:
The Rolex GMT-Master II ref. 16710 generation stands as one of the most iconic sports watches in the Rolex history. The 16710's adaptability allowed it to be equipped with a range of bezel inserts, such as the iconic red and blue ‘Pepsi’, the black and red ‘Coke’, or the understated all-black, allowing each insert to set its own unique character.
This generation of the GMT-Master II was introduced in early 1989 and remained in production until 2008, making it the longest-produced GMT reference to date. Throughout its production run, the reference underwent several incremental upgrades, reflecting Rolex’s continuous commitment to improvement while maintaining its core identity.
The following section will first highlight some of these incremental upgrades before diving into the specific details that make this particular example truly stand out from the crowd.
Dial:
The material used on the hands and hour markers is Super-LumiNova, which emits a green glow in the dark. During production, Rolex transitioned through different lume materials, first replacing tritium with luminova around 1998, before upgrading to Super-LumiNova in 2000 for greater brightness and longevity, without the radioactive properties of tritium.
Super-LumiNova dials can be recognized by the "Swiss Made" text at the bottom of the dial, which replaced the earlier "T<25" marking found on tritium dials and the "Swiss" marking seen on luminova dials.
Bracelet:
From 2000 onwards, Rolex began equipping all sport models with Solid End Links ‘SEL’ on the bracelet, replacing the hollow end links used in earlier models. This upgrade increase the overall robustness and premium feel, enhancing the watch’s modern feel while maintaining its classic design.
The watch is equipped with a fully brushed hollow-link oyster bracelet, reflecting a classic design and lightweight feel. This bracelet features a flip-lock clasp, offering added security compared to earlier bracelets that lacked this feature.
Case:
Similar to the Submariner Date models of the same era, GMT-Master II examples produced from 2003 onwards no longer feature lug holes, giving the case a more refined and modern appearance. Furthermore, Rolex began incorporating the laser-etched crown on the crystal at the six o’clock position.
Warranty:
Most GMTs of this generation were accompanied by paper warranties, unlike later models which came with the more modern plastic warranty cards. Rolex began transitioning from paper warranties to plastic warranty cards around mid-2006.
In the following sections, we will explore all the key features that make this watch truly special. We’ll begin with a closer look at the dial, followed by a discussion of the movement powering this exceptional timepiece. Next, we’ll shed light on the overall condition of the watch, before concluding by showcasing the complete set that accompanies this remarkable example.
The rare ‘Stick Dial’ explained:
One of the most visible features of this watch is its so-called ‘stick dial’, a detail that captures the attention of true Rolex enthusiasts. On this dial, the ‘II’ in ‘GMT-Master II’ is printed as two parallel lines ‘||’, rather than the traditional connected Roman numeral found on most models.
This small yet significant design change can be found on example from as early as 2004, becoming more frequent in later production models. Similar to the sought-after ‘APH’ dials found on certain Rolex Daytona 116520 models, the ‘Stick Dial’ is one of those small details that enhance the watch’s collectibillity.
Caliber 3186 vs. 3185, what you need to know:
Throughout most of its production run, the Rolex GMT-Master II reference 16710 was powered by the reliable Caliber 3185—a movement celebrated for its durability and precise dual-time functionality. However, in the final years before the reference was discontinued, Rolex introduced the updated Caliber 3186, found exclusively in select late-production 16710 models, making these examples particularly desirable among collectors.
In 2005, Rolex marked the 50th anniversary of the GMT with the debut of the GMT-Master II ref. 116718LN. Crafted in solid 18k yellow gold, this model featured the Caliber 3186 for the first time and was offered with either a black or green dial. The green dial, first introduced with this anniversary model, was later revived in the 18k white gold ‘Sprite’ release, ref. 126729VTNR in its current lineup.
How to identify a Rolex GMT-Master II with Caliber 3186?
The Caliber 3186 differs from its predecessor in several key ways. Most notably, it features Rolex’s proprietary Parachrom hairspring, identifiable by its distinctive blue hue. This hairspring offers superior resistance to shocks, temperature fluctuations, and magnetic fields, enhancing the movement’s overall stability and precision.
Caliber 3185:

In addition to the improved hairspring, the 3186 also incorporates subtle technical refinements that contribute to smoother functionality—especially noticeable when adjusting the independent 24-hour hand. Whereas the 3185’s GMT hand can sometimes exhibit a slight "wiggle" when setting the time, the 3186 movement operates with markedly improved precision and stability.
Today, 16710 examples equipped with the Caliber 3186 are considered highly collectible transitional models, bridging the gap between the classic five-digit GMTs and the modern six-digit references.
The condition:
One of the most frequently debated topics within the watch community is the condition of a watch—specifically, whether or not it should be polished. Some collectors strongly prefer to keep a watch completely untouched, valuing originality and the story that natural wear tells. Others appreciate the fresh, like-new appearance that polishing can offer, enjoying the restored sharpness and shine.
At Steiner Maastricht, we’re not against polishing—as long as it’s done correctly. When executed with care and respect for the watch’s original lines and contours, polishing can enhance a piece without compromising its integrity. That said, the decision to polish is never taken lightly. The age and current condition of the watch play a crucial role in our approach.
In general, the older the watch—and especially if it’s in good condition—we prefer to leave it unpolished. As time goes by, truly untouched examples become increasingly rare, and preserving that originality often adds both character and value to the piece.
Given the rarity of this particular watch and the key features outlined above, we have made the decision to keep the case completely untouched. Preserving its original condition maintains its authenticity and collector’s value.
Complete Collector’s Set Details:
In addition to its key features and desirable unpolished condition, this watch is offered as a complete set. Originally sold in Paris in 2012, it comes with its plastic warranty card, which confirms the original bezel insert reference, 16710BLRO, with ‘BLRO’ referring to Bleu/Rouge, the iconic ‘Pepsi’ color scheme. Both original swing tags are also present, further enhancing its collectibility.
The bracelet is fitted within the code 78790A, while the clasp bears the matching code EO10, correctly dating it to 2007 and confirming its originality to the watch. The bracelet remains in excellent condition, retaining its full, original length with all 13 links intact.
With its unpolished case, iconic Pepsi bezel, rare 'Stick' dial, and upgraded movement, this reference perfectly combines vintage aesthetics with modern reliability. It represents an exceptional opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike, a distinctive and highly collectible Rolex sports model watch that strikes the ideal balance between heritage, rarity and everyday wearability.
