Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15550ST: An Icon

Independent & Family-Owned
Audemars Piguet is one of the most recognisable names in the world of fine watchmaking, particularly for its Royal Oak collection. Introduced in 1972, the Royal Oak emerged during a turbulent time for the Swiss watch industry and was a bold move by a family-owned brand determined to survive and innovate.

A Legacy of Innovation
Founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, Vallée de Joux, Switzerland, Audemars Piguet was established by Jules Louis Audemars, a movement specialist, and Edward Auguste Piguet, a master of finishing and regulating movements. From the beginning, their mission was to create high-complication mechanical watches, including minute repeaters, perpetual calendars, and split-seconds chronographs.

By the late 1940s, Audemars Piguet was thriving, experiencing its strongest 20-year period of growth. Annual production increased to 5,500 watches, nearly ten times what it had been at the beginning of this boom.

The Quartz Crisis
For over a century, Swiss watchmakers had dominated the global market with their unparalleled mechanical craftsmanship. However, the landscape shifted dramatically in 1969 when Seiko introduced the Astron, the world’s first commercial quartz wristwatch. Quartz technology, being more affordable, accurate, and easier to maintain, quickly gained traction.

Demand for traditional mechanical timepieces plummeted, and Swiss brands, particularly independent ones like Audemars Piguet, faced unprecedented financial pressure.

The Birth of the Royal Oak
In a bold and decisive move to weather the crisis, Audemars Piguet decided to pivot. The brand envisioned a stainless steel sports watch that could suit both daily wear and elegant occasions, a radically different offering for the time.

As the story famously goes, Managing Director Georges Golay called renowned designer Gérald Genta the evening before the 1970 Basel Fair. The request? A revolutionary steel sports watch by the next morning. Genta rose to the challenge, drawing inspiration from a diver’s helmet spotted at Geneva’s Pont de la Machine. He incorporated the visible gasket and eight screws into the design, creating the Royal Oak’s now-iconic octagonal bezel.

The Game-Changer
Upon release, the Royal Oak was controversial, its stainless steel construction and high price point were unlike anything the market had seen. Yet it struck a chord. The Royal Oak didn’t just survive, it reshaped the luxury sports watch segment. It paved the way for future icons like the Patek Philippe Nautilus, also designed by Genta, released in 1976.

Today, the Royal Oak stands as one of the most recognisable and desirable watches in the world.

The Royal Oak Selfwinding – Ref. 15550ST
Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Selfwinding Ref. 15550ST.OO.1356ST.06 captures everything that makes the Royal Oak a legend.

It features a 37mm stainless steel case, with the hallmark octagonal bezel secured by eight polished screws. The brushed surfaces flow seamlessly into the integrated steel bracelet, while polished chamfers add a dynamic edge. The result is a timepiece that’s both elegant and sporty, true to the original vision.

Inside, the watch is powered by the self-winding Calibre 5900. This movement offers hours, minutes, seconds, and a date function at 3 o’clock, along with a 60-hour power reserve. A sapphire caseback reveals the beautifully finished mechanism, complete with an 18ct. Rose Gold open rotor with the initials AP.

The Grande Tapisserie Dial
This reference boasts a stunning cobalt blue dial decorated with the “Grande Tapisserie” pattern, a signature of the Royal Oak line. The dials are still crafted using over 100-year-old pantograph machines, a meticulous process that can take 20 to 50 minutes per dial. It’s a true symbol of artisanal precision and craftsmanship.

White gold hour markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating enhance readability, while the white gold AP logo at 12 o’clock provides a finishing touch of class.
The watch is water-resistant to 50 metres due to its push-down crownd, signed with the initials and is secured with a stainless steel AP folding clasp, combining durability with understated luxury.

AP Coverage Service:
The brand has released a 2-year complimentary service in order to protect AP watches from burglary and robbery as well as functional damage. This service is available for all the AP watches initially acquired in 2023, 2024 and 2025 in their boutiques, AP houses or via official retailers. This service is also available for this watch.

Royal Oak 15450ST vs 15550ST:
The reference 15550ST was released in 2022 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak, replacing the earlier 15450ST. While both models appear nearly identical at first glance, there are several subtle but meaningful differences:

Dial Layout:
The 15450ST features the “AP” initials in white gold at 12 o’clock, with “Audemars Piguet” in white text just below. At 6 o’clock, the word “Automatic” also appears in white.
In contrast, the 15550ST offers a cleaner dial, with less text, enhancing its minimalist

Crown Design and Water Resistance:
The 15450ST uses a screw-down crown, the 15550ST, however, has a push-down crown, both equally a water resistance to 50 meters.

Seconds Hand:
On the 15550ST, the seconds hand features a loop as counterweight, an elegant design update not present on the 15450ST, which has a more traditional straight hand.

Case Size:
The 15450ST and 15550ST both have a diameter of 37MM, the 15550ST however has a smiller thickness of 9MM compare to a thickness of 9.8MM on the 15450ST.
